Material selection method for composite springs

In this contribution a method for an objective material selection process for composites is presented. The concept is based on a dataset with properties of different fibers and matrices. In the first step, composite properties are being calculated for each possible composite combination, including the demands determined before. In the next step, different factors are being introduced, which are rating the individual material property. The final step is the formation of a top-down-ranking with a material recommendation. Furthermore, a software implementation is presented as an automation of the method. In order to evaluate the approach, the procedure is being tested on three spring examples. At last, a short schematic plan with operating instructions is being derived and discussed in comparison to existing material selection guides. The research is a contribution to extend the range of composite spring applications and shows aspects for future developments.
